If you’re a college student, this one’s for you! I have lived in the dorms for two years now. Your room can be clean one day, and 24 hours later look like a tornado hit it. After living in two scenarios (room with roommate and shower in room, and rooming alone with communal bathrooms) I have learned enough to help you stay organized, and enough to help you develop an organizational plan so you don’t end up like Phoebe 😉
Hack #1 Storage Cart
I use the Honey-Can-Do rolling cart from Bed Bath and Beyond. This cart is not the highest quality, however it is college budget friendly. There are many uses for a storage cart in the dorms. You can use it as a night stand, to hold important papers you don’t want to lose track of, and much more. If you share a bathroom with a roommate, you might consider a storage cart so that you don’t mix up your items.
Hack #2 Cube Organizer
Cube Organizers work great for storing groceries that don’t need to be refrigerated. The top of them is also a great place to put your coffee maker, and other small appliances. Before I had one of these, I could not find space for my groceries other than in the built in bed drawers. Not the best place to store fresh fruit! Check out the link for the one I use. If you’re looking for more exciting colors than the ones offered, consider painting it 🙂
Hack #3 Shoe Hanger…but not for shoes!
Use a shoe hanger to hold your packaged snacks. Check out this one from Target! Imagine hanging this in your closet and filling it with fruit snacks, cookies, granola bars, and more!
Hack #4 Car freshener…but not for your vehicle!
Looking for ways to make your room smell awesome? Put a car deodorant clip on your room vent. My favorites are the ones from Bath and Body Works. Just make sure you purchase the ones meant for the car vent and not your visor.
Search for my “Moving into the dorm like a pro (packing list)” blog for more details on my favorite picks for the dorm.
Hack #5 Shower Hooks for your closet!
Attaching shower hooks to your hangers are a great way to store tons of tank tops on one hanger.
Hack #6 Command Hooks
Do NOT move in without these bad boys! They are life savers. Attach these to your bathroom drawer to hang your curling iron on, or attach them to your wall to hang your tapestry on. Attach them to the back of your door to hang your robe and bathroom towel on. The possibilities are endless.
Keep checking back for more hacks, this post will be updated soon with more ideas.
